Description
Melanotan 2 (Melanotan II, MT-II) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide modelled on alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It activates several melanocortin receptors and is a standard tool compound in pigmentation research. Resolve BioLabs supplies Melanotan 2 in a 10 mg lyophilized vial.
What is Melanotan 2?
Melanotan 2 was developed at the University of Arizona in the late 1980s and early 1990s as part of research into sunless pigmentation. Cyclising the peptide made it far more stable and potent than natural α-MSH. Unlike the linear analog afamelanotide (Melanotan I), MT-II acts broadly across melanocortin receptors MC1R, MC3R, MC4R and MC5R. It is not approved for human use in the US, EU or Australia.

Research background
MT-II is used to study melanocortin-receptor biology: MC1R-driven melanogenesis in melanocytes, and the MC3R/MC4R pathways in the brain involved in appetite and energy balance. Its activity at central melanocortin receptors also led to the development of its metabolite-like relative PT-141 (bremelanotide), which differs only in its C-terminus.

Testing and documentation
Available reports describe the samples tested. Match the compound, format, strength and lot identifier with your supplied label; a supplier report does not by itself verify current stock. See the report library.

Melanotan 2 FAQ
What is the difference between Melanotan 1 and Melanotan 2?
Melanotan I (afamelanotide) is a linear, more MC1R-selective peptide; Melanotan II is cyclic and acts on several melanocortin receptors.
How is Melanotan 2 related to PT-141?
PT-141 has the same cyclic core but ends in a free acid rather than an amide.
Is Melanotan 2 approved?
No. It is sold for laboratory research only.
